Saxony-Anhalt: Lethal shots in Halle

The Attorney General has taken over the investigation. "We assume a right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic motivation to act," said a spokesman for the SPIEGEL.

A manifest has also surfaced on the internet detailing plans of aggression. According to SPIEGEL information, the document consisting of 3 PDF files is available to the investigators. After initial tests, it is rated as "authentic", as security circles reported. Among other things, agreed in the "Manifesto" and the offenders apparently partly self-built firearms with the weapons actually used in the attack match.

Top politicians from Germany and abroad were shocked, Chancellor Angela Merkel visited in the evening a synagogue in Berlin to express their solidarity with the Jewish community.

Not much is known about Stephan B. According to the SPIEGEL he had not noticed the police before. He apparently lives alone with his mother in Benndorf, whose apartment was searched by investigators on Wednesday evening. Neighbors say that Stephan B. lived a secluded life, never saluted, studied in Halle.

Weapons and explosive devices in the car

The first emergency calls were made by the police shortly after 12 o'clock. The video recording of the offender starts in a parking lot. You can see the steering wheel of his Golf, hear him curse. "What a shit," he says. And: "Come on, open."

He wants to stream his actions into the net, at first it does not seem to work the way he wants. Later, the video circulates briefly on the platform Twitch, which mainly use gamers. Stephan B. wants to be seen by a global audience. That's why he speaks English again and again. The video is available to SPIEGEL.

In a hate speech, he denies the Holocaust, before he puts on a helmet with the camera and drives off. Rap music is running. After a short drive, he stops in front of the synagogue. He reaches for one of the many weapons that are in the car, they look self-made. Then you can see Stephan B. trying to break into the synagogue, detonating an explosive device and shooting a randomly passing woman from behind.

"God has protected us"

His shots are also heard in the synagogue, the service is interrupted. Mayor Max Privorozki claims to be able to watch over a camera as Stephan B. tries to enter the locked synagogue.

"The perpetrator shot several times on the door and also threw several Molotov cocktails, guns or grenades to penetrate, but the door was closed, God has protected us, the whole maybe took five to ten minutes," says the mayor. According to Privorozki, in the synagogue, more than two hours after the attack, there were about 70 to 80 people.

The offender finally stops his attack. He goes back to his car and meets a man. It comes to a word exchange, the offender draws his weapon and pushes - but it does not solve a shot. The man gets in the car and drives away. He remains uninjured, because the gun of the offender at this moment apparently strikes.

He shoots at police officers

Afterwards, the culprit throws an explosive device into a kebab snack and shoots a man in the shop. In the video you can see that he shoots passers-by twice in front of the bar.

When the first police officers stop in front of the snack bar, the culprit hides behind his car and shoots at the policemen. He is hit himself and flees in his car.

"The brutality of the attack surpasses anything that has happened in recent years and is a shock to all Jews in Germany," said Josef Schuster, chairman of the Jewish Central Council. He also made serious allegations against the police. "The fact that the synagogue in Halle was not protected by the police on a holiday like Yom Kippur is scandalous."
