Nirvana relics: Kurt Cobains cardigan is auctioned

Frontman Kurt Cobain wore an olive green, washed-out knit cardigan for the most important television appearance of the band Nirvana. Now comes the garment from the "MTV Unplugged" concert under the hammer. Unwashed.

Many great hits were missing when the musicians of Nirvana appeared on November 18, 1993 in the Sony Music Studios in New York before the television cameras. Instead, the grunge band around Kurt Cobain played at their "MTV Unplugged" concert, especially lesser-known pieces by other artists: by David Bowie for example, the Vaselines, the Meat Puppets or the blues singer Lead Belly.

A worldwide success was the thing anyway, also thanks to the later published live album. Cobain was already alive at this time.

When recording "MTV Unplugged," Cobain wore an olive green, faded cardigan that is now being auctioned off. The garment was one of the items that would come under the hammer at the end of October in the context of the two-day auction "Icons & Idols: Rock 'n' Roll", said the auction house Julien's Auctions on Wednesday. The estimated value of the jacket is therefore at 200,000 to 300,000 dollars.

According to a report of the "Rolling Stone" the jacket has not been washed since the legendary TV appearance. Stains and burns of cigarettes are still visible. One of the originally five buttons is missing. In recent years, the garment has belonged to a businessman who kept them in a safe.

A fender and a letter from Courtney Love

For the acoustic guitar that Cobain used on the show, a Martin D-18E, there was a divorce dispute two years ago between the musician's daughter and her husband. The instrument will not be auctioned off. Nevertheless, the auction also includes a guitar owned by the musician. It is about a turquoise Fender Mustang, which was made in 1993 especially for the left-handed musician.

Their estimate, according to the auction house, is $ 300,000 to $ 500,000. The instrument also features a handwritten letter from Cobain's widow Courtney Love stating that the instrument was a grunge guitarist's favorite guitar.

The auction will feature more than 700 memorabilia by artists such as Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Queen, Bob Dylan and Elton John.
