In the late afternoon a helicopter lands in Karlsruhe. On board: Masked Special Forces and the Assassin of Halle: Stephan Balliet. He wears black headphones, a big patch sticks to his neck. It covers the bullet wound he had suffered the day before.
Balliet, who attacked a synagogue in Halle, shot two people and injured several others, is led to the judge. The Federal Prosecutor's Office has applied for an arrest warrant: Attorney General Peter Frank accuses Balliet of double murder, attempted murder in nine cases, assault, weapon offenses. Four kilos of explosives were found in Balliet's car. In short, "What we experienced yesterday was terror," Frank said.
Meanwhile, there is a clear picture of what Federal Minister of Justice Christine Lambrecht described as a "right-wing extremist terrorist attack". The event lasted less than two hours.
11:54 clock . Stephan Balliet parked his car in a parking lot near the synagogue in Halle. With laptop and mobile phone, he prepares the livestream for the internet. The passenger seat is full of weapons. Balliet turns the smartphone camera on itself, incites against Jews, migrants, feminism.
11:59 clock . Balliet puts on a helmet to which the smartphone is attached. He starts the engine to drive to the synagogue. It contains 51 people at this time.
12:01 . The culprit arrives at the synagogue and stops his car at the roadside. For several minutes he tries to penetrate the building - but all gates and doors are locked. Mayor Max Privorozki observes Stephan Balliet on a camera. "The culprit shot several times on the door and threw several Molotov cocktails, guns or grenades to penetrate, but the door remained closed, God has protected us," he later told the MIRROR.
12:03 . A passerby walks past Balliet. She complains about his exploratory explosive charge, which she apparently considers a New Year bull. The assassin shoots the woman.
12:05 . A courier asks about the woman lying on the ground. Balliet tries to shoot him as well, but the gun fails. The man can escape in the car.
12:07 . Balliet abandons the attempt to invade the synagogue. He gets into the car and drives off. After about 500 meters drive he discovers the snack bar "Kiez Döner". He decides that this is his new goal, and stops.
12:10. With explosives and homemade weapons he attacks the restaurant. He fires indiscriminately on passers-by and kills a craftsman in the kebab shop.
12:16. When Balliet wants to leave by car, he encounters the police for the first time since the beginning of his attack. A patrol car has crossed the street. Balliet fires several shots at the police and hits the car. He is then hit himself by a police ball on his neck. Nevertheless, he manages to get into the car and drive away.
12:18. With his car Balliet drives past the synagogue again, but does not stop. Sirens of the police are not heard.
12:22. Balliet throws his smartphone out of the passenger window near Halle's main train station. He drives at this time on the B 6 in the direction of Leipzig. Momentarily Balliets track loses.
About 13.00 clock. He appears 38 minutes later in Wiedersdorf, a small town about 14 kilometers from Halle. He is apparently forced to change his car, possibly because he had previously shot himself in a tire. In Wiedersdorf Balliet tries to hijack a car and shoots two more people, a man and a woman. Then he robs a taxi from a garage to continue the flight.
13:38. Balliet goes with the Mercedes E-class taxi on the A 14 and the A9, then it turns on the federal highway 91 in the south. There he finally causes a traffic accident in which nobody is injured. At 13:38, the police arrested Balliet near Werschen, some 40 kilometers south of Halle.
Balliet's actions have triggered horror. "The Jewish community is considerably unsettled," said the President of the Jewish Central Council, Josef Schuster. Jewish institutions in Dessau, Halle and Magdeburg received immediate police protection. This, added Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU), should be permanent.
