Recovery impossible: capsized car carrier must be scrapped at sea

2019-10-13T08:05:34.740Z

The "Golden Ray" capsized in September off the coast of Georgia can not be salvaged. The car carrier must be cut in a lengthy procedure on site.

How do you rebuild a two-hundred-meter-long freighter when it capsizes? How do you get that many thousands of tons of wreckage from the spot - along with its load of 4200 cars in the fuselage?

Not at all.

This has now been decided by the Salvage Command Unified Command responsible for the recovery. There is nothing left to do but to cut apart the wreck on site piece by piece and transport the fragments one by one. The fuel on board - just under 900 tons - has been pumped off in the meantime. The upcoming work of scrapping should take, according to the US Coast Guard "weeks and months".

The car reefer ran out of Brunswick harbor to Baltimore in the early morning of 8 September when a fire broke out on board. Captain Jonathan Tennant and the pilot on the bridge decided to steer the ship back to shallow waters and control what the Havelie Command said saved lives and prevented worse consequences, reports Captain Offshore News Portal.

The freighter of the South Korean shipping company Hyundai Glovis had then quickly hit list and was capsized. Twenty members of the crew were directly rescued by rescue workers who were directly on shore near the coast. Four people were initially considered missing, they had been trapped in the engine room, deep in the hull of the ship.

Forces first drilled a hole in the hull of the freighter to provide the people trapped with water and food. Later, the sailors were also freed by the extended hole. See the pictures of the rescue here:

A threat to the environment did not emanate from the capsized ship according to the local authorities. Nevertheless, corresponding schedules have been put into effect.
