It is the most important award for German-language novels: Sasa Stanisic has received the German Book Prize for the book "Ursprung".

Before the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the foundation of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels awarded the German-language "novel of the year" in the Kaisersaal of the Frankfurter Römers with the German Book Prize.

The winner in 2019 is Sasa Stanisic with " Origin" (Luchterhand, March 2019 - read an author's portrait here).

From year to year changing jurors choose from among the submitted by the publishers and possibly also demanded novels first 20aus, from which then a shortlist with six titles was selected. The prize winner receives 25,000 euros, the other five authors of the shortlist each receive 2,500 euros.

Last year, Inger-Maria Mahlke won the German Book Prize with "Archipel", a family history from Tenerife.
