A man accused of anti-Semitic assault has admitted the act. "I am very ashamed of it," said the 21-year-old in front of the Bonn district court. The prosecutor accuses the German with Palestinian roots, in July 2018 the professor of philosophy professor Jitzchak Jochanan Melamed teaching in the United States, beaten him several times the Kippa and finally punched him and kicked.
He was sorry, and if he could, he would undo the act, said the man. After the attack, he testified to the police that he had been "completely stoned." The drug addicted man has several criminal records. In court, he has to answer among other things for assault and sedition of anti-Semitic motivation.
Victim criticizes police behavior
The incident also caused a lot of commotion because police officers mistakenly mistook Melamed for the attacker and overwhelmed him. One of the officers hit him in the face. NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) and the Bonn police chief later apologized for the incidents. An investigation of the prosecutor's office came to the conclusion that the police can not be proven wrong.
Melamed was not present at the current trial, but read a statement from a lawyer. In it, he protested massively against the behavior of the police: What he had been "by a gang of four Bonn policemen" was done, he considered much worse than the attack of the defendant.
