Appraisers have certified the damaged museum ship "Seute Deern" a "total loss". Shell, keel and subspace are 100 percent destroyed, according to the German Maritime Museum Bremerhaven in the final report on the condition of the wooden barque. In a renovation, the ship would have to be replaced to 75 percent. A repair would therefore in fact be a new building.
Due to a recommendation of the experts, the ship will not be put in a floating dock as originally planned. The Foundation Council of the Museum is deliberating on Wednesday (23 October) in a special session on the future of the "Seute Deern".
The "Seute Deern" was built in 1919 in the USA. The ship has long been in need of major refurbishment, in February it was also damaged in a fire. According to NDR, 150,000 liters of water had to be pumped out of the hull daily. When the pumps failed in August, the "Seute Deern" sank in the Old Port. Meanwhile, the ship has been lifted, but it continues to run in water.
