We all have ideas for a better life. And in the new smarter podcast, we meet people every week who tell us how to use them in everyday life. From interval fasting to marathon training to relationship tricks - we hear stories about first steps, first successes and new beginnings. Every Saturday an episode appears.
In episode three we meet the journalist and author Sabine Magnet. She has written a book about the Impostor phenomenon, also known as the Imposter Syndrome. A conversation with a photographer friend was the trigger for it. When Sabine congratulated her on a photo spread in a reputed magazine, the friend replied, "Well, luck was, the light was good, you know, sometimes I'm scared they'll find out I'm just bluffing."
For Sabine, that was the aha moment: "The sentence hit me in the mark." She realized that she often felt that way - and that she was not alone with it. She spent nine months researching, talking to scientists and writing down her findings. "I've done what you're supposed to do, dealing with it, and that helps, I found out," says Sabine today.
Writing the book was a kind of therapy for them, but it also led to new self-doubts: "When I gave my first interview, I just thought, oh god, if I do not know a study right now, they'll check that out I'm not a scientist, I was in total panic, but now I had the tools and I could tame it. "
Such fears know many people. Some suffer only temporarily, including other large parts of their lives. And again and again there are reports that even prominent artists or people in management positions are affected. Just recently, pop star Ellie Goulding has made public that she feels that way.
How did Sabine manage to get her fears under control? What exactly is behind the terms impostor phenomenon and impostor syndrome? And how do we know if we are affected?
Answers to this can be found in episode three of the new podcast "Smarter Living".
