In the district of Eving in Dortmund, two unknown people perpetrated an arson attack on a mosque during the night. The two had emerged behind a parked car and threw two incendiary devices in the direction of the mosque, the police said.
A bottle broke then on the facade of the Muslim house of worship, the liquid in it went up in flames leaving little material damage. The other set of fire had shattered on the floor in front of the mosque and had ignited there. The attempt to throw a third bottle had failed.
"I was shocked by this fact and I can understand the resulting need for security of the mosques," said Dortmund's police chief Gregory Lange. "As police, we will do everything possible to protect the communities." A police investigation commission has been set up, and according to its own statements, the police have a special eye on mosques in Dortmund and Lünen.
The facts are unclear, it is determined in all directions. However, the police also said that it would be examined whether the Syrian border dispute with Turkey could have been a background of the deed. What clues for this conjecture actually exist, said a police spokesman on demand not.
He also gave no information on the identity of the suspected attackers. The two had fled north, according to the announcement. The police asks for information to clarify the fact under the telephone number 0231-132-7441.
