Fire in the football special train: Investigators suspect technical defect as a cause

How did the fire break out in a special train with fans of the SC Freiburg on board? Investigators have now submitted their assessment of the fire in Berlin.



A wagon burned brightly, several people were injured: The fire in a football special train on the weekend in Berlin is due to first findings of the investigators to a technical defect.

A spokesman for the federal police said that they are currently investigating this cause, but it will continue to be investigated in all directions. Also by the Attorney General Berlin a technical defect was mentioned as a possible cause of fire. After the fire on Saturday night, there had also been speculation about pyrotechnics as the cause of the flames.

VIP rooms offered as emergency quarters

In the train were about 700 fans of the SC Freiburg. The cars came to a stop at the Berlin S-Bahn station Bellevue. 150 firefighters were in action. Four travelers were slightly injured, according to investigators. They had complained about complaints because of the heavy smoke.

The fans had been on the way back from a 0-2 defeat at 1 FC Union Berlin. After the incident, they were taken to the nearby Berlin Central Station, from where they could start their journey home

Meanwhile, the 1. FC Union Berlin had offered to provide the affected fans with his VIP rooms as a place to stay, as the SC Freiburg reported. The club thanked for this help and "for the prudent behavior of the fans" as well as the organizers of the ride.
