John le Carré's new novel "Badminton" picks up on the trials and tribulations surrounding Brexit in his British homeland. However, the 88-year-old may already have found a way out for himself to remain loyal to the EU despite his country leaving the country.
The British writer said in an interview with the dpa news agency that he had applied for an Irish passport to remain an EU citizen. His paternal grandmother was born in Ireland, which entitles him to Irish citizenship. Whether he even turns his back on his country when leaving the EU is unclear.
"There is no more logic"
"For the first time in my life, I've been thinking about living somewhere else," said le Carré of dpa. In "Badminton" he has his characters condemn the Brexit as "shitty chaos". He himself sharply criticizes Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who must be "stopped immediately". "There is no more logic in Johnson's shouting."
Le Carrés said in the interview that he was really scared that his country would leave Europe. "I am convinced that if we stay, we can strengthen the spirit of Europe, and help create a real counterweight to the US, to China."
