Nirvana's unplugged gig at MTV is legendary. Instead of trying to interpret their own grunge hits with acoustic instruments, the musicians played some of their lesser-known songs and cover versions, such as David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World.
The cardigan, worn by vocalist Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) at the show five months before his death, has now been auctioned in New York for $ 334,000, the equivalent of about $ 300,000. That was the highest price ever paid for an auction for such a piece of clothing, the auction house Julien's Auctions announced on Saturday.
The garment belongs to a series of memorabilia that came under the hammer during the two-day auction "Icons & Idols: Rock 'n' Roll". Other items included a Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 1000 from 1976, which once belonged to Elvis Presley and was worth $ 106,250 to her new owner. A gold-colored Mercedes-Benz 450 SL of the "King of Rock'n Roll" brought $ 125,000. A velvet jacket worn by Michael Jackson at the party celebrating Elizabeth Taylor's 65th birthday found a buyer for $ 65,625.
However, another piece from the estate of Kurt Cobain, his Fender Mustang, scored a far higher price. The turquoise guitar was made in 1993 especially for the left-handed musician. Except for the knobs, the guitar is still original, according to Julien's Auctions. The original buttons had been stolen by a fan when the guitar was on display from 2002 to 2011 in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Despite this small flaw, the instrument was worth $ 340,000 to a collector, or around $ 307,000. He also gets a handwritten letter from Cobain's widow Courtney Love about the instrument, which states that this instrument was a grunge guitarist's favorite guitar.
A total of more than 700 memorabilia were offered by artists such as Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Madonna, Queen, Bob Dylan and Elton John.
