Philippines: At least dead and several injured in earthquake

The Philippine island of Mindanao has been shaken by an earthquake. At a school panic broke out - a 15-year-old was killed by falling debris.



An earthquake of magnitude 6.6 in the Philippines killed at least one young person. Several people were injured, the authorities said. According to the US earthquake watch USGS, the earthquake struck the island of Mindanao in the south of the country. Accordingly, there was a series of aftershocks. The danger of a tsunami does not exist.

The fatality is a 15-year-old student who tried to escape from his school in the city of Magsaysay during the quake. The boy had fallen under a collapsing wall, said a city spokesman. At the school had broken because of the quake panic, several other students were injured.

The quake shook the region at 9:04 local time. The epicenter was located in the province of Cotabato, just under 1000 kilometers south of the capital Manila. In some places the power went out.

"Buildings did not just move, they swayed," said a doctor from a hospital 25 miles away from the epicenter. About ten patients were taken to the hospital shortly after the quake. Some of them have had head injuries.

The quake stopped according to authorities in some areas for almost a minute. Several homes and public buildings were damaged. Schools in the area were closed as a precautionary measure.

The mayor of Tulunan city, Reuel Limbungan, said the city council building had been destroyed by the earthquake. There are numerous reports of injuries, but these have not yet been confirmed.

Because of possible aftershocks, the head of the Seismological Institute recommended that residents first stay outdoors.

Just two weeks ago, Mindanao had been shaken by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake. There were at least five deaths and dozens of buildings were damaged. According to the authorities, 570 people are still in emergency shelters.

The Philippines is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a region with strong seismic activity. There are often earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
