A shark attacked two young tourists off the Australian coast and seriously injured them. The two British were in the rescue service, in the region of the Whitsunday Islands in the water, a popular bathing area on the east coast. Near the community Airlie Beach bite a shark a 28-year-old from a foot off, a 22-year-old suffered severe injuries to one leg.
The men were first treated on the beach and then flown to the hospital in the city of Mackay. A message from the emergency services on Twitter said that her condition was serious. The two were on a boat trip and went into the water at a popular snorkeling spot when a shark attacked.
"One of the patients was attacked first, and the shark would probably have returned," a rescue worker said. Two paramedics, who were aboard the tourist boat, provided first aid.
There are occasional shark attacks in the area, which includes the world's largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef. In November last year, a man was killed. The Whitsunday Islands are visited by more than 750,000 holidaymakers each year.
According to statistics from the organization Shark Attack File, there were at least ten shark attacks on Australian shores this year. Last year, the Taronga Zoo in Sydney counted 27 attacks nationwide.
