Basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki has been honored by the city of Dallas with the renaming of a street in "Nowitzki Way". The 41-year-old revealed the green, white-lettered road sign near the American Airlines Center, home to his ex-club Dallas Mavericks.
"It's surreal," said the native Würzburger. "After my first year, the city would probably not even have a dumpster named after me, let alone a street."
A section of Olive Street now bears the name "Nowitzki Way". The city council of Dallas had decided after a request of fans already a good month ago. "Since coming to Dallas from Germany more than two decades ago, Dirk has had a tremendous impact on our city," Mayor Eric Johnson said in a statement. "His work ethic and his playing on the floor were legendary, his social commitment continues to be great."
Nowitzki had won the Mavericks 2011 championship in the North American professional league NBA. He played a total of 21 years for the Texans.
