Bad weather on the Mediterranean: Woman killed by palm tree in Mallorca

Autumn storm "Amélie" has caused severe damage in southwestern Europe. In Nice, a senior citizen was buried. At least two people died.



On the Spanish holiday island of Majorca, a woman was killed in a heavy storm by a palm tree. An eyewitness told the "Mallorca newspaper" that she had been hit by the tree on her head.

The disaster occurred on Sunday near the cathedral in the capital Palma, as the local newspaper "Diario de Mallorca" said, citing the authorities. Several people had tried, according to "Mallorca newspaper" in vain to help the woman. Resuscitation attempts by paramedics were also in vain.

Storm depression "Amélie" had caused the weather service Météo France to wind speeds of 163 kilometers per hour during the night. This value was measured at Cap Ferret southwest of Bordeaux. Wind speeds of 139 kilometers per hour were measured on the Ile de Ré further north. Even in the interior of Bordeaux, the wind had a strength of 121 kilometers per hour.
