Just over a month more: the life expectancy of newborns in Germany has increased again slightly. Girls who are born today, have a life expectancy of 83.3 years, said the Federal Statistical Office on Tuesday in Wiesbaden. For boys, the life expectancy is 78.5 years according to the mortality table. Compared to the last survey, the life expectancy of boys and girls increased by about 0.1 years.
Life expectancy at birth indicates how long newborns would live on average according to current conditions. It has been rising in this country for many years. Until the 2006/2008 survey, she had a long-term increase of 0.2 years for girls and 0.3 years for boys. In the meantime she is increasing less.
Life expectancy is still different for men and women, but the gap has narrowed in recent years. By the year 2000, newborn girls had arithmetically six years longer life expectancy than newborn boys. Meanwhile, the difference is 4.8 years.

National and international differences
There are also differences between the federal states. Newborns in Baden-Württemberg have the highest life expectancy (84.1 years for girls and 79.7 years for boys). The lowest is the life expectancy for girls in Saarland (82.1 years) and for boys in Saxony-Anhalt (76.3 years). The difference between the sexes in favor of women is highest in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (6.4 years), in Hesse it is lowest (4.3 years).
The Federal Statistical Office also reports that Germany does not occupy a leading position in international comparison. For example, the newborns in Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Austria have a higher life expectancy than in Germany. Compared to the mean of the EU states, boys in this country have a slightly higher life expectancy, namely 0.2 years more - girls with 0.2 years less a little lower.
