Now it's official: The US politician Ilhan Omar is divorced from her husband. Only a month ago she had stated that there had been an "irrevocable break" in the marriage between her and Ahmed Hirsi.
The couple had been married since January 2018, but have been dating much longer. The two have three children together. The divorce was now official on Tuesday, government officials in the State of Minnesota signed off the relevant papers. Through her lawyer, Omar stated that she was grateful that she and her husband had found a solution in the interests of their children.
A few months ago, a woman in Washington accused Omar of having an affair with her husband. When the politician was asked if she was separated from Hirsi or had a relationship with another man, she told the broadcaster WCCO-TV, "No, I'm not." Since then, she refused to answer questions about her private life.
Omar has been making headlines over the past few months, mostly because US President Donald Trump has repeatedly publicly verbally attacked them. Omar had fled as a child with her family from Somalia to the United States. She is one of the first Muslim women in Congress and the first refugee to ever make it to the US House of Representatives.
