James Dean has been dead for 64 years. A production company wants to revive the Hollywood icon on the screen thanks to computer technology - with the blessing of the family. But there is also harsh criticism.

It's a cast that does not go down well everywhere: James Dean, the legendary American actor who died in a car crash in 1955 at the age of 24, is said to be back on screen with computer technology. This was announced by those responsible for the film project "Finding Jack" on Wednesday.

They wanted to fall back on old footage and photos of Dean, said the directors Anton Ernst and Tati Golykh, who recently founded the production company Magic City Films. According to their own information, they have obtained the appropriate rights from the company, which represents Dean's family in these matters. The boss of this company, Mark Roesler, defended the decision, among other things, with the indication that the Instagram account in Dean's name have more than 183,000 followers - the actor is still moving people today.

"James Dean was known as Hollywood's 'rebel' and the following saying made him famous: 'If a man can bridge the gap between life and death, if he can live after his death, then maybe he was a great man.' only true success, "said Roesler. He was confident that Dean would support this "modern act of rebellion".

"After months of research, we chose James Dean"

The movie "Finding Jack" deals with the Vietnam War. Dean is supposed to personify a character named Rogan, it's one of the main roles. For months they had searched intensely for the perfect actor for the role of Rogan, said director Ernst. "And after months of research, we chose James Dean." He is honored that the deceased's family has agreed - they will not disappoint.

The preliminary work for the film production to begin according to the industry journal "Hollywood Reporter" on 17 November. Another actor should take over the sound recordings for Dean.

James Dean starred in only three films in his short life: "... because they do not know what they're doing" (1955), "Beyond Eden" (1955) and "Giants" (1956). For the last two he was posthumously nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor.

"Disrespectful", "wrong", "shameful"

The fact that he should now take over the main role in a new film thanks to modern computer technology, is often criticized. Actor Chris Evans ("Captain America") is one who called the plan "disrespectful" and "wrong." "Maybe we can have a computer paint a new Picasso, or we can get some new John Lennon tunes," he wrote on Twitter. "The complete lack of understanding here is shameful."

I'm sure he'd be thrilled

This is awful.

Maybe we can get a computer to paint a new Picasso. Or write a couple new John Lennon tunes.

The complete paint of understanding here is shameful. https://t.co/hkwXyTR4pu

This is not the first time actors have been seen in new films after their deaths. However, these were mostly people who had already played the role at earlier times. At the end of 2016, the Disney studio for "Star Wars: Rogue One", for example, was revived digitally by British actor Peter Cushing, who died in 1994. Cushing had already played the Fiesling in earlier Star Wars movies (read more about Hollywood's deadstar business here).
