In August, police used a Taser against Dalian Atkinson. The former football pro died. Now two police officers have been charged in the case.

More than three years ago, former British footballer Dalian Atkinson died in a police operation. Now a police officer has been charged with murder. A colleague of the man has to answer for bodily harm, as the law enforcement agency Crown Prosecution Service announced. The men appeared in court in Birmingham.

Atkinson died on August 15, 2016 at the age of 48 in Telford, England, after police used a stun gun (Taser) against him. He suffered from kidney and heart problems. The striker, who had played for Aston Villa, among other things, still received medical help, but was pronounced dead a few hours later.

The police had been alerted at that time to settle a dispute. According to his brother, Atkinson had strangled his father and threatened to kill him.

Atkinson's family members welcomed the decision of the judiciary, as the lawyer told the family now. But they regretted that more than three years had passed since the death of the athlete.

Atkinson played in his career from 1985 to 1997, including Manchester City, Aston Villa, Ipswich Town, Sheffield Wednesday, Real Sociedad San Sebastian and Fenerbahce Istanbul.
