At least 15 people were killed in a collision between two trains in eastern Bangladesh. At least 58 other travelers were injured, police and rescue workers said.
Accordingly, the accident occurred in the early morning hours in the Brahmanbaria district about 80 kilometers east of the capital Dhaka. At a station in the city of Kasba, a train on the way to Dhaka and a fast train with the destination Chittagong were merged. This derailed three cars.
Nine dead were recovered at the accident site near Mondobhag Station, said district head Hayat ud-Dawla Khan. Six others died on the way to the hospital. Cranes and other equipment were brought to the crash site to lift the wagons and free the passengers.
The railway authority is investigating the case. "It's possible that a dropout caused the accident," Khan said. Several train connections were temporarily closed. Train accidents are common in South Asian Bangladesh due to poor infrastructure.
