In a barracks in Austria, a soldier was attacked by service dogs and fatally injured. The chief sergeant should have been responsible for the care and feeding of the animals.

In a barracks in Austria, military dogs have killed a 31-year-old handler. The dogs had attacked the NCO, apparently in the kennel, said the Ministry of Defense in Vienna. A comrade found him with fatal injuries in the night.

The soldier went to the kennel on Wednesday around 4 pm to take care of the dogs. About eight hours later, a duty officer noticed two free-running Belgian Shepherds on the barracks area. A dog handler, who wanted to lock the two animals back, then found the dead colleague.

Commission should investigate accident

The Austrian Armed Forces currently employ 70 military dogs. Of these, 41 Rottweiler, 15 Belgian and five German Shepherds and nine Labradors.

Police investigations into the current attack have started, the ministry said: "The army has set up an accident commission, which includes a veterinarian, a doctor and a lawyer."
