The Hochmosel Bridge is finished - second highest bridge in Germany

2019-11-14T06:07:53.137Z

Eight years have passed and now the biggest bridge construction project in Europe is coming to an end: the 1.7 km long and up to 160 meters high Hoch Moselle crossing near Zeltingen-Rachtig.

The huge Hochmosel bridge near Zeltingen-Rachtig is ready. "Only a part of the white lane marking is missing," said the construction supervisor at the Land Mobility Rhineland-Palatinate, Christoph Schinhofen, on the bridge on the rolling marking machine. The mega-building in the district of Bernkastel-Wittlich spans 1.7 kilometers in length and up to 160 meters in height over the Mosel valley.

With the last white lines, the currently largest bridge construction project in Europe comes to an end after about eight years of construction. Cars should roll over it in a week: The traffic clearance is planned after a "maiden voyage" of a politician convoy for the 21. November.

Before that, on Saturday (16 November), the civil works on the bridge will celebrate the end of construction work. Residents could experience the building again without any traffic, said the local mayor of Zeltingen-Rachtig, Bianca Waters.

The bridge is part of a total of 25 kilometers long new route (B50) between Eifel and Hunsrück. The bridge has been under construction since 2011, and since summer 2014 steel girders have been pushed over the piers for the superstructure. After the bridge in August 2018, the asphalt works followed in this spring and summer.

The Hochmosel bridge is the second highest bridge in Germany after the Kochertal bridge (maximum 185 meters) in Baden-Württemberg. The building was controversial since its planning. Critics complain that the bridge destroys the idyllic landscape between the vineyards Ürzig and Rachtig. The stability of the structure also raised doubts.

Cost increases also made headlines. According to current planning, the entire project costs 483 million euros, the bridge accounts for about 175 million euros.
