At Winterberg in Sauerland, a motorist has captured a bison with his car. The 400-pound wild cattle did not survive the collision.

A bison weighing several hundred kilograms died in a collision with a car near Winterberg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The 48-year-old driver suffered a shock in the collision in the morning, as a police spokesman in Hochsauerlandkreis announced. He was reportedly hospitalized.

The Wisent carrier association was loud police at the scene. European bison were long considered extinct. They had been resettled in 2013 in the Rothaargebirge. At first, the herd consisted of eight animals. There was a lot of offspring and it also spread in neighboring forests in the Sauerland. Foresters have since complained about severe damage to their trees. They try to stop the conservation project judicially.

In the spring a provisional compromise was reached: with a permeable game fence the herd is to be kept in a demarcated area. Subsequently, an independent report will be prepared in order to finally decide on the future of the project in three to five years.

Signs warn of crossing bisons

The area at the accident on the main road 480 near the trail parking lot Albrechtsplatz is known by the police for crossing bisons. Road signs warn of the danger. So far, however, no wild cattle have been killed.

European bison grow up to 1.90 meters high and weigh up to a ton. On the run they can run fast 60 kilometers per hour and overcome obstacles two meters high. Only a few hundred years ago, the animals were common in European forests, then almost died out.

In addition to the herd in Germany, there are now only a few populations in Europe, including the Chernobyl-restricted area in Ukraine and the Bialowieza Forest in Poland and Belarus.
