The super villain blockbuster "Joker" sets another record at the box office. The bleak character study with Joaquin Phoenix as mentally ill Batman opponent broke the billion mark on Friday - so more than a billion dollars recorded worldwide.
Todd Phillips' comic book is the first R-rated feature film to overcome this hurdle, as the industry magazine Variety reported. After the strict R age rating in the US, under-17s are only allowed to watch the movie when accompanied by an adult.
The most successful R films to date have been "The Matrix Reloaded" (2003), with nearly $ 830 million in worldwide revenues, followed by "Deadpool 2" (2018), at around $ 785 million.
