Munich: Accident causing was apparently alcoholized

A Dashcam has recorded a fatal accident in Munich. The recording is according to the investigators an "essential evidence". The suspect should have been drunk while driving.



A motorist who drove into a group of young people during his escape from the police in Munich should have been drunk. It had been detected alcohol smell in the 34-year-olds, the investigators said in a press conference.

The driver had captured two teenagers on Friday evening, a 14-year-old died, a 16-year-old was seriously injured. The accident has been filmed according to investigators with a so-called Dashcam from another car. These are video cameras installed in cars that record the view from the windscreen while driving.

Motorists under suspicion of murder

The 34-year-old had been traveling in the wrong direction when he caught the two teenagers. The Dashcam owner drove the information after the car parallel to him. Prosecutor Anne Leiding describes the recording as "a very significant piece of evidence." The use of Dashcams is legally controversial. In May 2018, however, the Federal Court had admitted such recordings in principle as evidence in court.

In addition, the investigators now announced that the suspect is no longer in psychiatry. There he was for his own protection only for a short time, said Leiding. The man is in custody on suspicion of murder. It is unclear whether he is currently in a hospital or in a prison. To the degree of his injuries, the authorities gave no information.
