The infant mortality has fallen dramatically, reports Unicef in its balance sheet of the last 30 years. But there are new risks - climate change threatens especially the youngest.

Children born today have ever-increasing life expectancy and are healthier than in the past three decades. This is the conclusion of a report by the Unicef children's organization on the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, this mainly applies to children from wealthy families.

UNICEF General Manager Henrietta Fore said that in addition to ongoing challenges in health, nutrition and education, children today face new threats such as climate change, online abuse and cyberbullying.

The report said that the worldwide mortality rate of children under the age of five had fallen by about 60 percent compared to 1989. More children went to elementary schools and children's rights had a positive impact on the laws in many countries.

Small children in poor households at a disadvantage

However, progress has not been evenly distributed: in developing and emerging countries, twice as many under five year olds are dying from poor households as well as from more affluent households.
