After the fatal attack on the doctor Fritz von Weizsäcker in Berlin determined a homicide. The 59-year-old had been stabbed on Tuesday evening during a medical lecture in a Berlin clinic.

Fritz von Weizsäcker, the son of former Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker, was killed on Tuesday evening during a medical lecture at the Schloss Clinic in Berlin.

An armed man from the auditorium had attacked the chief physician of the local gastroenterology department. Weizsäcker died on the spot. A police officer who happened to be on the scene tried to stop the perpetrator and was seriously injured. The attacker was eventually overwhelmed by some of the approximately 20 listeners and shortly afterwards handed over to the police. The injured man was taken to hospital.

The incident took place around 18:50 in the clinic near the Charlottenburg Palace. At the "Forum 11/2019", the physician in the meeting room Haus H of the Department of Psychiatry gave a lecture on the subject "Fatty liver - (K) a cause for concern?".

At 6:59 pm, an emergency call was sent to the fire brigade and the police, paramedics and an emergency doctor rushed to the rescue. But they could not help the severely injured top medical doctor. A revival attempt was unsuccessful. Several people at the scene were cared for by emergency counselors, it was said by the Berlin fire department.

How are the investigations going ?

At night, the suspect should be interrogated. About his identity and possible motives is not yet known. Forensic doctors, forensic technicians and investigators of a homicide squad secured possible traces at the scene. Parts of the private clinic were closed for this purpose.

Weizsäcker's family will be asked if there may have been any evidence of a threat to the internist. The police expect in the course of Wednesday with new findings, as a spokeswoman said.
