It was a small event, not even two dozen visitors: Fritz von Weizsäcker held a lecture in a Berlin clinic when he was stabbed by a man with a knife. The case sparked horror and grief - also because Weizsäcker comes from a prominent family.

Fritz von Weizsäcker, born 1960 in Essen, leaves his wife and three children together. He was a renowned physician: From 1979 to 1987 he studied human medicine in Bonn and Heidelberg, after which he went to the USA for a practical year.

After working in Freiburg, Boston and Zurich, he was chief physician at the Department of Internal Medicine I at the Schlosspark-Klinik in Berlin since 2005. There he held a lecture on the topic "fatty liver" on Tuesday evening (more about the deed can be found here).

Fritz von Weizsäcker was the son of Richard von Weizsäcker, who was Federal President from 1984 to 1994. Previously, the CDU politician since 1981 ruled as Governing Mayor West Berlin.

Weizsäcker received worldwide attention with his historic speech on the 40th anniversary of the German capitulation in the Second World War, with which he turned in 1985 against a widespread oblivion of history in the Bonn republic. The fact that he probably represented less of a concern than Kohl's left opposition, as shown in his re-election in 1989: SPD and Greens were so taken by the conservative head of state that they did not even set up a counter-candidate.

Richard von Weizsäcker died in January 2015, he was 94 years old.

Richard von Weizsäcker married Marianne von Kretschmann in 1953. The woman born in Essen had attended high school in Hamburg after graduating from high school and completed a commercial apprenticeship there.
