Heavy weather: highway bridge collapsed after storms in Italy

Just over a year after the bridge collapse of Genoa, another highway viaduct has collapsed in Italy. Whether there were cars on the section during the accident is still unclear.



A motorway viaduct has collapsed after the heavy storms of recent days in northern Italy. It is about 30 meters long piece of the A6 Turin-Savona about 1.5 kilometers from the city of Savona, reported the region of Liguria on Twitter.

Cause could be a landslide to first findings. It was not clear yet if cars were on the bridge, the region wrote. The news agency Ansa had reported that no people were affected. The highway was interrupted between Savona and Altare in the direction of Turin, for safety reasons, the opposite direction was blocked according to Ansa.

In August 2018, after a storm, a motorway bridge collapsed in the regional capital of Genoa, some 50 kilometers east of Savona. It killed 43 people. The reconstruction has started.

Northwestern Italy has been hit by heavy rains for days. In parts of Liguria and Piedmont was on Sunday the highest alert red. Many residents are cut off after landslides from the outside world. Basements, underpasses and business premises were flooded.

Heavy storm at Genoa

In Liguria, according to the regional government, 374 people were cut off from the outside world. 122 others were brought to safety. Except for parts of Liguria and Piedmont was the highest alert Red on Sunday also for the southern region of Calabria at the toe of the Italian boot.

In Genoa, there had already been heavy flooding on Saturday, especially in the Polcevera Valley. This is the part of the city where 43 people died in 2018 when the highway bridge collapsed. The A10 motorway from Genoa to Ventimiglia on the French border was interrupted on Sunday in two places by landslides, as the region announced on Twitter.

Also in Venice, the water rose again on Sunday and reached in the morning 130 centimeters above normal sea level. On 12 November, a flood of 187 centimeters had caused severe damage in the lagoon city. On Sunday evening, the opera should open La Fenice with a premiere of "Don Carlo" by Giuseppe Verdi again. There, the floods in mid-November had caused damage of two million euros, as the newspaper "La Repubblica" wrote. For the evening, a high water level of 120 centimeters was expected.
