In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a light aircraft crashed over a residential area in the city of Goma. At least 23 people were killed in the disaster, according to civil protection.
The plane was therefore on behalf of Congolese private airline Busy Bee on the road and crashed therefore on Sunday morning shortly after the start. There were 15 to 20 people on board the machine type Cornier -228. According to authorities, the plane was on its way to Beni, which is about 350 kilometers north.
A statement promulgated by the Governor of North Kivu Province states that the pilot had "misled the start". An airline technician was quoted by a news website as saying he was primarily concerned with a technical problem.
The machine should have crashed over the residential area Mapendo / Birere and crashed into at least one house. On a video, the aircraft's smoldering cockpit was seen in the rubble of a house, while local residents rushed to the scene of the accident.
Due to lax safety standards and inadequate maintenance in the Congo, there are always aircraft accidents. It was not until October that a cargo plane had crashed an hour after launching in Goma. All eight passengers died. In the EU no airline may fly from the Congo.
