The dignity of man, freedom of expression, equal rights - our constitution guarantees elementary rights. But citizens also have a duty to deal with the constitution. "The Basic Law is a framework within which the citizens can live freedom - but they have to fill it," demands Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble in a conversation with pianist Igor Levit and SPIEGEL author Susanne Beyer.

Seven decades after its entry into force, the question arises as to how topical our constitution still is. Schäuble, for example, sees room for improvement in the field of environmental protection: "I am one of those who believe that we should now expand the Basic Law with the dimension of sustainability, something that was not thought of 70 years ago."

But is not it worthwhile questioning existing contents of the constitution? Can freedom of expression in times of social media still be the same as in 1949?

In the new episode of "SPIEGEL Live" you will hear the whole conversation about the meaning of our constitution and the similarities of politics and art. It was recorded at the end of September as part of the "Spiegel Live" series of events in Hamburg's Thalia Theater.
