Large parts of the US are struggling with several storms. Rain, snow and gale-force winds massively affected Thanksgiving travel. Tens of thousands of people were without electricity in the states of Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, among others. In many places, highways had to be closed.
Thanksgiving is celebrated in the US on the fourth Thursday of November. Families gather for a turkey meal throughout the country. Public life is resting on the holiday. It is estimated that around 55 million people wanted to travel by car or by plane on Wednesday. Many of them were hampered by the bad weather.
At Denver airport alone, more than a thousand flights were canceled or were delayed. In the states of Oregon, Nevada, and Northern California, a "bomb-cyclone" raged. Wind speeds of 155 kilometers per hour were measured at Lake Tahoe in Nevada. This is the highest value in the region since 1962, said a spokesman for the weather service. The authorities called on residents to stay at home and cancel any travel plans.
