The first time it crashed in the middle of the night: In Texas, there was a serious disaster in a chemical plant. The second explosion followed 13 hours later.

Two huge explosions in a chemical plant have frightened co-workers and residents and injured three people. Four places must be vacated, leaving around 60,000 people in Port Neches, Groves, Nederland and parts of Port Arthur their homes.

A giant fireball rose above the factory of chemical company TPC in Port Neches, Texas, as photos and videos published on online networks showed. The images show large parts of the plant, which are thrown into the air.

Resident Ryan Mathewson told AFP news agency that his house had broken windows and dented doors. Even parts of the ceiling had broken in. The explosion has caused "horror and fear" in his family, said the 25-year-old.

District Judge Jeff Branick told local news station KFDM News that it was "a miracle" that there were no fatalities. Thus, three people were injured: one suffered burns, a second one broke his wrist and a third one leg. According to the operator TPC, the casualties are two employees of the factory and one employee of a subcontractor.

13 hours lay between the explosions

The company said all employees had been taken to safety. The three injured workers were receiving medical care. According to the company, the explosion occurred around 1 am (local time) in a "processing unit" of the factory. TPC then activated the crisis response plan and notified the fire department. The second explosion followed around 2pm.

The petrochemical plant is approximately 135 kilometers from Houston, the largest city in the US state. According to the company's website, more than 200 people work in the factory. Among other things, the flammable gases butadiene and butane are produced there.
