Philippines: Several dead at typhoon "Kammuri"

Floods, power outages, roofs covered: Typhoon "Kammuri" has caused enormous damage in the Philippines. Almost 500,000 people have become homeless.



The death toll from the tropical cyclone "Kammuri" in the Philippines has risen to at least eleven. This was reported by police and civil protection authorities of the Southeast Asian country. Almost half a million people, most of them in the eastern part of the island state, have reportedly lost their homes temporarily.

According to the police, three of the most recently reported dead are three people drowned in the provinces of Sorsogon and Camarines Sur. Several other casualties had been killed by falling trees or roof parts. The heavy gusts of "Kammuri" had also left damage to many buildings. The storm covered roofs, overturned trees and electricity pylons, caused flooding and power outages.

On Tuesday, the typhoon reached the capital city of Manila, where most of the authorities stopped working and classes were canceled. Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport also closed temporarily - more than 500 flights were canceled. According to the authorities, the airport has resumed operations, traffic should normalize there throughout the day.

Typhoon has weakened

The storm, according to meteorologists, is gradually moving northwest away from the Philippines and has weakened somewhat. He still reached wind speeds of up to one hundred kilometers per hour. Individual gusts would have up to 125 kilometers per hour.

The Philippines are hit by numerous typhoons every year. One of the strongest typhoons, "Haiyan", hit the island nation in 2013. More than 6,000 people were killed and around four million people lost their homes.
