The debate about the content of antibiotics in animal foods is not new, and more and more media articles have recently been shown that eating foods containing antibiotic residues is not recommended and may cause health damage. However, some of the chicken breeders in Israel still use antibiotics, which, on the one hand, are for the obvious purpose of curing disease, but also to accelerate the growth of poultry.

A burning health problem

The multiplicity of antibiotics leads to bacteria developing resistance to the type of antibiotics provided by breeders. This is because one of the prominent features of bacteria is their ability to divide, they also know how to pass on the resistance feature to their offspring. The result is bacteria resistant to the existing antibiotics - causing an increase in the spread of disease and deaths.

And if all this is not disturbing enough, here are some numbers: A report released in the UK predicts 10 million people worldwide in 2050 as a result of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and today there are some who claim it is one of the health dangers the world faces.

In addition, a 2018 article published in the Journal of Antibiotics states that, according to a report by the CDC, antibiotics in agriculture are responsible for about 20 percent of human antibiotic-resistant infections. Accordingly, the authors of the article suggest that, like the global anti-smoking campaign, significant action must be taken to reduce the excessive use of antibiotics in agriculture. In addition, as early as 2012, various bodies including the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Infectious Diseases Community (IDSA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) have put together statements and corrections to change antibiotic use policies.

What is the situation in Israel?

Oddly enough in Israel, a country where chicken consumption is the second largest in the world after the US, there are no regulations governing the use of antibiotic in poultry, so it is of great importance to check if the chicken you buy does grow without antibiotics.

But there is also good news. Chicken can certainly be raised without massive use of antibiotics. Reducing the extent of avian morbidity is possible through the prevention of their overcrowding, adherence to bacteria-free ecology and the use of proper professional accompaniment. Controlling their growth is possible with the help of a suitable diet based on the addition of cow biotics and pro-biotics that contribute to the proliferation of the good gut bacteria in the poultry digestive system.

A market survey conducted in Israel in 2016 by the Brandman Institute demonstrates that over 70 percent of Israelis believe that consuming chicken without antibiotics and hormones is healthy and would prefer to buy such chicken over another chicken. All we have left is to hope that the chicken breeding trend without antibiotics will increase over time in Israel as well, for the health of us all.
