The curator Manfred Schneckenburger is dead. One day after his 81st birthday he died on Monday in Cologne - this was announced by his friend via a curator on Thursday.
The Stuttgart-born curator and art historian was artistic director of the documenta in Kassel in 1977 and 1987, emphasizing in particular the socio-political responsibility of art, according to the exhibition organizers. Under his direction, video art, performances and photography were incorporated into the exhibition concept at "documenta 6", which took place in 1977. In addition to the founder Arnold Bode, he is the only curator who has more than once been in charge of the major international exhibition.
From 1973 to 1974 he was director of the Kunsthalle Köln. In addition, the Stuttgart-born Schneckenburger worked from 1991 as a professor at the Kunstakademie Münster and later as rector. Four years ago, he was awarded the Hessian Culture Prize.
Schneckenburger last lived in Cologne with his wife.
