India: Police shoot four suspected killers

2019-12-06T08:30:16.541Z

At a crime scene in India police have shot four suspects. The alleged rapists are said to have tried to disarm the forces.

Following the rape and murder of a 27-year-old veterinarian in India, the four alleged perpetrators have been shot dead by the police. Policemen wanted to commit the crime scene with the suspects during the night, said a police officer of the dpa news agency. The men had suddenly tried to grab the weapons of the forces and flee. The police had shot the men out of self-defense.

The four men between the ages of 20 and 30 were suspected of raping and killing the young woman last week. She disappeared, according to police, at a toll station near the city of Hyderabad. There she parked her scooter.

Men had offered to help the woman with the repair of her scooter, then they should have abducted the woman, raped and killed. Subsequently, they are said to have taken the corpse to a road underpass about 25 kilometers away and set it alight.

Thousands of people demonstrated in several cities after the fact and demanded more rights for women. In India, there have been repeated cases of sexual violence against women and children in recent years, which have also caused consternation internationally.

In 2012, a student in a bus in New Delhi was raped by several men while driving and was so badly injured that she died. This case had led to great indignation and stricter laws in the country.

The official statistics for 2017 indicate a total of 33,000 rapes for India, including more than 10,000 rape of minors. However, the number of unreported cases could be significantly higher, also because many cases are treated very slowly in court. According to the Reuters news agency, 127,800 cases of possible rape at the end of 2017 were still in the process.
