During parental leave to South Africa? Fly with infants to Spain, Thailand or the USA? Many couples dream of such trips, but then shrink from the uncertainties. Long car rides, tropical diseases, many changes of location - which is already exhausting for adults, is a challenge for toddlers.
Nevertheless, Martina Peters has already ventured with her family on several continents. And for them, there are hardly destinations that are not suitable for children. "The way of traveling has not really changed," she says. The tempo, however, is that "we simply prolonged the stays per location as we did it in pairs, so kids just need a little more time to get involved in a place, and to even understand where they are."
The timetable for the trip is therefore no longer the parents, but especially the offspring. In order not to overwhelm their children, Martina and her husband plan fewer trips, sightseeing or tours than before. Thus, more relaxation periods are possible on vacation: "As a parent you have to take the time, even if you are still so adventurous."
But dangers, risks and too much stress are not the only problems that Martina has to deal with. The fact that flights and long journeys put a strain on the climate does not fade them out. But she does not want to be distracted from traveling. For them it is more important to educate their children "to open, curious, people interested in culture". "To do that, we think, is also about getting to know the world," says Martina.
Does she wonder what her children will say later? How do long journeys not become a nightmare? And how does an exciting family holiday succeed without a lot of money?
