Former US college baseball player Pete Frates, who became famous for the Ice Bucket Challenge, has died. The 34-year-old had used the trend in 2014 and beyond to draw attention to the nervous disorder amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and raise funds for research after he himself became terminally ill in 2012.
In 2014, videos were viral on social networks, where users were holding cold water containers over their heads. Afterwards, they asked friends to do the same thing within 24 hours and to donate money to research the illness of ALS.
According to the US portal ESPN, more than $ 220 million has been donated by 2014 alone. "He was a fighter who inspired us all to use our talents and strengths for others," said Frate's family.
Frates played for the Boston College baseball team between 2004 and 2007 and captained the team.
