Young police officers with bad grades in North Rhine

2019-12-10T14:20:01.852Z

In North Rhine-Westphalia, about every sixth candidate for the university breaks down. One reason: many junior police officers get by at the exams. Students with bad grades now need tuition.

The North Rhine-Westphalian Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) worries about the benefits of prospective police officers. In his opinion, as the offspring go through too many exams, on the initiative of Reuls the commissioners are obliged to take part in tutoring courses.

According to the Ministry, the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration will offer so-called refresher courses from summer 2020, there will be courses in six cities. A letter from the Head of the Police Training Unit at the Ministry indicates that the measure is "a building block" to "address the increased number of deficit-related exam results". The tutoring is aimed at students who would not achieve "sufficient results" in examinations, in the courses they should be prepared for appropriate retreat exams.

Currently, 17 percent of students in the bachelor's degree program "Police Train Service" drop out of their apprenticeship. The 2019 graduation rate is 4.5 percent higher than in the 2018 graduation year. The increase, it is said, is mainly due to a higher number of failed exams ,

According to a report by the Ministry of Interior on the "state of the drop-out and failure rate", the University of Applied Sciences now offers student counseling, where the candidates can talk about "personal problems, learning problems, conflicts during study and exam anxiety". At the moment, 6600 commissioner candidates are being trained in North Rhine-Westphalia.
