(ANSA) - TOKYO, DECEMBER 11 - The Nuclear Regulatory Authority in Japan has approved the project to dismantle two nuclear reactors in Fukui prefecture, the most powerful to be dismissed from the date of the Fukushima nuclear accident, in March 2011.
The operator Kansai Electric Power will spend about 119 billion yen, almost a billion euros, to demolish reactors 1 and 2 of the Oi power plant, in the central west of the archipelago, a figure lower than that which would have served to keep the plant alive in line with the new regulations.
The two units, active since 1979, could reach a capacity of over one million kilowatts, but they had exceeded the limit of 40 years imposed by the executive after the Fukushima disaster. Any extension of 20 years is allowed but with even more stringent guidelines.
