Marta Cartabia was unanimously elected president of the Constitutional Court (14 votes in favor and her white card). But his mandate will be short, just 9 months.

It will expire on 13 September 2020, as Giorgio Napolitano was appointed to the Consulta on 13 September 2011 and the office of constitutional judge cannot last more than nine years.

For the first time a woman arrives at the top of the Constitutional Court. The judges of the Consulta elected president of the Catholic jurist Marta Cartabia. Arrived at the Court in 2011 on the nomination of the then head of state Giorgio Napolitano, since 2014 vice-president, Cartabia is a professor of constitutional law and has an international profile for studies and publications. Originally from the province of Milan, she is 56 years old and is among the youngest presidents that the Consulta has had.

" A crystal glass has broken ". Thus Marta Cartabia commented on her election as president of the Consulta, the first woman in history. " I have the honor of being a forerunner, " he added.

"The new Finnish president - he added - said that age and sex no longer count. In Italy they still count a little. I hope soon to be able to say that they no longer count".

Last summer, before the birth of Count Bis, Cartabia had touched on another record. His name was circulated as a possible prime minister of a transitional government and if it went through it would be the first woman in Italian history to hold the office of prime minister. Married and mother of three, at the Consulta she was rapporteur of important sentences, such as those on vaccines and on Ilva.
