2019-12-11T08:25:56.638Z

How to treat Christmas with a sense of humor and still be solemn, show Kacey Musgraves, Molly Burch and Norah Jones with Puss N Boots on cozy Christmas albums. Plus: a ragged quota man.

Kacey Musgraves - "The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show"
( MCA Nashville , since November 29 )

It's becoming more and more fashionable for American country stars to move into the global pop universe as soon as they get the chance. The prime example is of course Taylor Swift, who made his way from Nashville into the Champions League of the music industry. In keeping with the festival, the musician, who has actually grown up on a Christmas tree farm, has just added the track "Christmas Tree Farm" to the streaming services of the world.

But Kacey Musgraves is already ready for the next country pop crossover star, which seems so perfect that it gets dizzy: she can sing, write songs, she's smart and witty - and she also looks fabulous. No wonder then that the 31-year-old Texan in the US sells millions of CDs and collects numerous Grammys or similar awards.

Already on her last album "Golden Hour", Musgraves spread her country sound in all the pop genres, which gave her a fresh audience, but hurts the traditionalists among her fans, and for comfort she is releasing her second Christmas album A very Kacey Christmas, now follows, as a soundtrack to the eponymous TV special (Amazon Prime), the "Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show" - another balancing act between old school and modern age.

Just a look at the guest list, which ranges from Camila Cabello to Troye Sivan, Zooey Deschanel and the currently inevitable talk-comic James Corden, shows Musgraves' meanwhile global pop ambitions. Musgraves combines fine own compositions with festive permanent howlers like "Let it Snow" or "Rockin 'Around The Christmas Tree". Whereby she shines especially when she is totally reduced to the acoustic guitar with Lana Del Rey "I'll Be Home For Christmas". This delights the guests in every pub, whether in Nashville, London or Berlin.

Puss N Boots - "Dear Santa"
( Blue Note / Universal, since October 25th )

Norah Jones seems to have a heart for Christmas music. Again and again, the Manhattan-born daughter of Indian sitar Grandmaster Ravi Shankar has festivities on all sorts of occasions such as "Christmas Is Now," "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear," or "Baby It's Cold Outside", which has since become # Metoo-discredited. with Willie Nelson). So it's no wonder that she delivers a whole - if scarce - holiday production in time for the Christmas season with her hobby band Puss N Boots.

At Puss N Boots, Superstar Jones and her colleagues Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper have enjoyed themselves for eleven years whenever a gap in their schedule opens up. The original idea was once that Jones, as part of this trio, wanted to refine their guitar playing beyond the medial perception. Those lucky enough to experience the band in the Greater New York area in downtrodden kaschemmen, as they warm up happy old songs, tried new music - and exchanged the instruments if necessary in a flying change. An album about this appeared five years ago at Jones' parent label Blue Note.

As the three of them also attend special "Xmas shows" every year, "Dear Santa" is not really surprising. The five songs, however, is the great pleasure to hear that the artists apparently had when importing. It offers four original compositions, of which especially the Gaga humor of "Christmas Butt" gives pleasure. On top of that there is an amusing campfire version of "Silent Night". By the way, on December 20, the three are playing in New York City.

Rick Wakeman - "Christmas Portraits"
( Sony Classical, since November 29th )

With his white beard, Rick Wakeman, wearing a red cap and coat, could casually perform at company parties as Santa Claus. But so urgently needs the 70 -year-old Londoner not the money. Wakeman became famous in the 1970s as a keyboarder for the Progrock group Yes, previously a sought-after studio musician, assisting David Bowie ("Space Oddity"), Cat Stevens ("Morning Has Broken") and many other pop greats.

Listened to on the radio

Wednesdays at 23 o'clock there is the Hamburger Web-Radio ByteFM an intercepted mixtape with many songs from the discussed records and highlights from the personal playlist of Andreas Borcholte.

After his time with Yes, Wakeman recorded over 90 mostly strangely entranced solo works. Meanwhile, the jack of all trades has come to rest. Probably inevitable. Because he once used to let the puppets dance, as a world champion drank and smoked, so he says, years have been erased from his memory. He has just survived three heart attacks. So time for mineral water and inner retreat. And for Christmas music.

On his new holiday soundtrack he plays as introverted piano as one who has seen God and was allowed to go back again - a spectrum of well-being between the monastery and shopping mall sound system. The choice of melodies alone reveals the old connoisseur, who in addition to proven classics such as "Silent Night", "The First Noel" and "We Three Kings" also old British folk tunes such as "In The Black Midwinter" or "The Holy And The Ivy "offers. Wakeman has already announced accompanying concerts. Maybe he will actually come on stage in a red robe.

Molly Burch - "The Molly Burch Christmas Album"
( Captured Tracks / Cargo )

After all, the fine art of the successful Christmas plate consists of reviving classics that have been doomed to death and, ideally, conjuring up something original. The 28-year-old election Texan Molly Burch gets both well. That she writes remarkable own songs, she proved in the recent past with her first two solo albums. Now she lays down with her first Christmas album.

The cover shows the singer in red in the midst of all sorts of Christmas tricks in front of a Christmas tree of rather bleak shape. Caressing the cat, she smiles slightly melancholy, which perfectly captures the mood of this song collection: somewhere between sadness, wit and wormwood.

The selection of cover versions is first class. It ranges from the obscure sixties song "Snow Queen Of Texas" by The Mamas & The Papas to the Stax soul treasure "What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas?", Originally from The Emotions.

There is also a lively interpretation of George Michaels Wham! Memory "Last Christmas" and a beautifully irradiated version of Abbas "Happy New Year". By contrast, Burch's own songs, including the breathtaking "Holiday Dreaming" or the drunken gluttony celebration "Hard Candy Christmas", do not fall off at all. So it remains to be hoped that Molly Burch will survive many festive days with an ambivalent mood.
