On the occasion of the international mountain day the first provisional results of the survey dedicated to visitors were held in Bolzano, which the Dolomiti Unesco Foundation, with the functional network "Tourism, development and mobility", coordinated for all the Dolomites by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, commissioned Eurac Research, in collaboration with the Ca Foscari University of Venice. 70% of those interviewed are potentially willing to make a voluntary contribution to projects aimed at maintaining the territory, such as improving paths, via ferratas and shelters.
"We interviewed over 3600 people in 23 important points from July to October," explained Andrea Omizzolo, a Eurac researcher who is coordinating the project. From the first raw results presented, it appears that 55% of tourists stay in the area, 45% are daily visitors. Most Italian respondents travel with their families, while around 80% - Italians and foreigners - stop in the mountain huts and shelters.
This study, conducted mainly with the field survey technique, was accompanied by data from mobile devices of tourists collected in aggregate and anonymous form thanks to the Vodafone Analytics service (big data) in some pilot areas of the Dolomiti Unesco site.
A question from the questionnaire is dedicated to the means by which the tourist / visitor reached the Dolomites: 82% responded with a private car. In the research it is emphasized that tourists, once they have reached the location of their stay, prefer to travel by alternative means such as bicycles and buses. More than 40% of respondents book directly in the structure, while 20% through online platforms. In general, a profile of a tourist is decidedly satisfied with his own experience of visiting with a score of 4.5 out of 5. An evaluation that the research team will analyze in detail by spring 2020, with the publication of the final results by the Dolomiti Foundation Unesco.
