France's southwest: Two people die in heavy storms

Violent gusts of wind have hit southwestern France. Cities are now fighting floods, falling trees are injuring some people. Thousands of households are still without electricity.



In France, at least two people were killed in severe weather. Storm gusts in the southwest and Corsica caused trees to fall, according to media reports, rains caused floods, among other things.

On Saturday evening, the second highest storm warning level continued to apply in eleven departments; on Friday, 16 departments were put on high alert.

A 70-year-old had an accident in the French Basque Country on Friday when he drove his car into a tree that had fallen onto the country road. On Saturday, the rescue workers found the body of a 76-year-old in Espiens in the south-west of the country. The pensioner had been swept up in the water in front of his house the night before when he tried to empty his mailbox.

Five other people were seriously injured when several trees fell on vehicles in the Lot-et-Garonne and Landes departments.

There were also widespread power cuts on Saturday. 40,000 households were temporarily without electricity, as the energy supplier Enedis announced. In the evening, 15,000 households were still affected. The previous day, the electricity in almost 70,000 households had failed.

On Friday, the wind had reached a speed of up to 142 km / h, as the French weather service Météo-France announced on Twitter. Up to 175 km / h were recorded in Corsica. At some measuring stations, new maximum values ​​had been measured.

On the coast in the southwest of the country, warning of flooding. For security reasons, residents were evacuated in several communities.
