If you take your eyes off this screen for a moment, where you are now reading the story, you will probably see more people in front of screens (one study showed that the average office worker spends 1,700 hours a year in front of a computer screen!). The screens surround us in many sizes and shapes: from the phone that we have on us almost 24/7 to the billboards that flash on us on the go. And all those screens are darting in front of our eyes for hours and hurting them.

Our eye was not designed for long, focused viewing. The extended stay in front of the computer, or other screen, creates a great effort on the eye muscles and from there a short way to headaches, continuous itching, dryness, blurred vision and more. In addition, the screens radiate blue light and prolonged exposure to this light results in the formation of toxic molecules in sensitive cells, which can cause macular degeneration (a disease that impairs central retinal vision cells and causes a sharp decrease in vision) and impaired sleep hormone production, melatonin. And if that's not disturbing enough, according to the World Health Organization, by 2050 half of the world's population will wear glasses, in part because of prolonged sitting in front of screens.

Yoga, the same method of mental and physical practice according to Indian philosophy, is known to significantly improve posture, flexibility, strength and weight and more recently awareness of its beneficial effects on the eyes as a response to the modern lifestyle - improving flexibility and focus. Here are some simple eye yoga exercises that can be easily incorporated into our daily routine (say, concurrently with brushing your teeth or applying face cream).

20 seconds of focus
Find an object away from you and stare at it for 20 seconds without blinking. Place your thumb just below the object and move the focus of your gaze between the object and the tip of your thumb.

Adding moisture to the eyes
For a few seconds, look in different directions and change into a kind of zigzag pattern. This will help increase the moisture on your eyeballs.

The blink is fast
Blink a few times and then close your eyes for 20 seconds. When your eyes are closed, try to look down, left, up, right, and then everything again in the opposite direction. Hold each pose for five seconds.

Relaxing the pressure from the eyes
Take a deep breath, sit back and place your elbows on the table. Rub the palms together to produce heat. When hot, put them on your eyes and just let them absorb this heat until it dissipates.

Strengthening the eyelids
Close your eyes partially and stay that way for about 10 seconds (if there is a tremor, you can focus on a distant object). Then close your eyes slowly.

Strengthening the eye muscles
Focus on the leftmost point you can without moving your head, and stay that way for about 5 seconds. Then blink several times to return to natural state, and do so again, this time in the opposite direction.

Pressure Relief Massage
Close your eyes and press lightly on the eyelids. Gently massage them in circular motions for ten turns to increase blood flow to the area. The action should also be repeated in the eyebrows area and then in the temples area

Eye yoga can significantly help reduce stress and strain, but it won't help with eye diseases like cataracts and glaucoma. If you feel you have a serious eye problem, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
