(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, DECEMBER 16 - Some Congolese families have sued Apple, Google, Dell, Microsoft and Tesla accusing them of being complicit in the death or mutilation of children forced to work in dangerous conditions in the cobalt chain, used in their supply chains for batteries that power smartphones, laptops and electric cars.
The Guardian writes, according to which it is the first time that the techcompany face a legal action of this kind. The case was presented to Washington DC by the local NGO International Rights Advocates on behalf of 14 parents and bimbidella of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Families are asking for damages for forced labor and further compensation for unfair enrichment, negligent supervision, and intentional imposition of emotional stress. The tech companies mentioned - they denounce themselves - encourage mining companies like Glencore that exploit child labor, paying the baby miners two dollars a day and making them work in risky conditions
