Historians believe that the first four former heads of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Criminal Police Office were involved in Nazi crimes. This is the result of an investigation that has now been presented in Düsseldorf.
Historian Martin Hölzl did research in archives in several European countries. The State Criminal Police Office of the federal state that was newly created after the Second World War was founded in October 1946.
"The report shows a very depressing result," said incumbent LKA boss Frank Hoever. "Of the six former LKA directors, the first four directors must be described as the perpetrators of the Nazi regime in the period up to May 1945. That shook me very much!"
"The result is all the more frightening, since some of the men in their office used a rope team from the Nazi era," said Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU). "From today's perspective, they should never have worked as police officers again."
