Study: Spicy pepper may prevent heart attacks

An Italian study that tracked tens of thousands of people for eight oils found that eating spicy pepper had a protective effect on the heart. So how many times a week should you eat chili pepper and is the protective effect also related to what you eat next to the spicy?

If you are an acute lover, we have great news for you - a new study has found that eating chili peppers has been linked to a lower risk of suffering a fatal heart attack. Researchers found that people who consumed the spicy vegetable more than four times a week were 40 percent less likely to have a heart attack, and their mortality risk of dying prematurely for no reason was 23 percent lower than those who did not eat chili.

The observational study published in the Journal of the American Cardiology Organization examined 22,811 citizens in the Molise area in Italy for about eight years. Volunteers reported how often they ate chili pepper foods (never, not often, often and very often). Each person's diet was set on a scale of zero to nine, based on how well they adhered to the traditional Mediterranean diet.

During the follow-up of the study, 1,236 people died. One-third of deaths were from cancer, while heart disease was similar. Twenty-four percent of people reported regular chili consumption. A third said they never ate chili.

People who ate chili four times a week were 23 percent less likely to die during the study. The risk of death from heart attack or coronary heart disease was respectively 40 and 34 percent among those who regularly ate chili pepper.

An interesting fact is that protection against mortality risk did not depend on the type of diet that people followed. "In other words, someone can follow the healthy Mediterranean diet, and someone else can eat less healthy, but for everyone, peppers have a protective effect," said researchers at the Instituto Neurologico Mediterraneo Neuromed (IRCCS) in Posili.

The health benefits of chili pepper have also been described in the past and were mainly attributed to a component called capsaicin, which is found in the harsher strains. The health benefit of the active ingredient, capsaicin, includes encouraging the breakdown of body fat cells and probably also having a direct effect on improving blood flow to the heart.

The team said more research is needed to understand how chili intake can affect health.
